FL Rare Fabric Initiative

"Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so that each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry"

– Richard P. Feynman, American Physicist

Under the FL Rare Fabric Initiative our sourcing team is given specific targets to source some of the most unique and interesting fabrics and blends from China to India to Europe and bring them to our discerning customers. These new innovations could range from new fibres that offer a unique character to a design or blends that offer superior comfort or even environmentally sustainable fabrics. Our objective is to make sure that whatever the latest innovation in the industry, our customers will find it first at FL.

“Derived from nature, designed for performance”

Sorona is an eco-efficient performance fibre developed by Dupont. This fibre transforms the fabric into an effortlessly soft and resilient fabric that embraces you like an old friend. Sorona is a semi-synthetic yarn – derived from nature but constructed with man-made processes. The sugar or glucose from the plants is fermented to produce a bio-PDO (propanediol) in a natural way. This bio-PDO is then mixed with TPA (terephthalic acid) to produce the yarn.

Fabrics made with Sorona have the following characteristics:

  • Smoother Feel: A fantastic hand feel with a wonderful drape.
  • Stretch & Recovery: Sorona offers inherent stretch, making it a great replacement for Lycra / Spandex.
  • Moisture Wicking: Dries quickly and wicks moisture off your skin providing unparalleled comfort.
  • Wrinkle Resistant: Its unique molecular structure, enables it to retain its shape, wear after wear.
  • Exceptional Softness: The exquisite softness that Sorona lends to fabrics, makes it feel like second skin.
  • Renewably Sourced: 37% of the Sorona fibre is derived from plant-based materials.

“Hemp – The Eco Fibre”

Hemp, often considered an Environmental Super Fibre, is nature’s most sustainable crop. It belongs to the Cannabis Sativa plant family, which grows well in warm tropical zones and in moderately cool climates. The hemp plant grows like a weed, not requiring any harmful pesticides for its growth and thriving on lesser water than most plants. It has the highest yield per acre among cotton and flax (from which linen is produced). It even gives back rich organic matter to the top soil, thereby enriching it! Fabric made from Hemp, is airy, breathable and 8 times more stronger than cotton. Hemp is naturally hypo-allergic, thus resulting in fabric that is very comfortable to wear. It looks exactly like linen and is naturally UV resistant, making it the fabric of choice for the summer. So visit our store to try out this sustainable fibre today
